Stay Safe on Hot Days This Summer

Posted on: April 30th, 2013 by Quik Shade No Comments

Summer is quickly approaching and for places like southern California the heat and sun can be very intense some days.  Of course we all want to enjoy ourselves outside at festivals, at the beach or on camping trips but the more precautions you take to stay safe in the sun the better time you will have in the end.  First of all it is important for sun safety to remember to keep well hydrated on hot days.

It is a general rule that you should drink 8 glasses of water a day but on a sweaty hot day outside you should probably drink more than that to regain the water you lose.  Even underneath a shade top like a tree or umbrella you are still experiencing the heat and water is important to have with you at all times.  If you are not in a place with shade readily available you can take an instant up canopy with you which only take a few minutes to set up and will keep you much more comfortable.  You can bring important items like hats and sunglasses which will offer some protection as well.  Make sure you buy sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection for your eyes.

If you are going to be moving around too much to bring a shade canopy like if you are going hiking for example it is really important to apply sunscreen every two hours.  You should also cover up with clothing that is thin and lightweight as much as possible.  If you are doing something active that is making you sweat a lot you can lose electrolytes this way so be sure to bring a sports drink or some salty snacks to keep your body balanced in addition to your supply of water. Preparing for All Types of Weather

Posted on: April 29th, 2013 by Quik Shade No Comments

Even in the mildest of climates, every place has changing seasons and different types of weather systems moving through from time to time.  It’s good to be prepared for whatever comes your way especially if you are planning on being outside for an activity like a camping trip for example.

Anytime you are exposed to the elements outside it can either be a very unpleasant experience if you are not properly prepared or an enjoyable and fun one if you have are ready for it.

The first thing you should probably get especially for camping is a shade canopy.   This can work for all kinds of weather if you have the right one and the canopy accessories that go along with it.  It can be lifesaver for either intense sun, wind or rain whatever the case may be.

The next most important thing besides shelter is having options for clothing with you that will keep you as comfortable as possible.  On a sunny day you will need more than just sunblock which can only do so much.  You will also need some lightweight clothing that will cover up most of your skin from the sun and a hat to shield your face.

When you are not sitting under the canopy top because you are hiking or just out and about you will be glad to have some of your own shelter from the sun covering your body.  The same can be said about other types of weather like having some warm clothing for winter and a reliable raincoat in case of a storm while you are outdoors.  It’s a good idea to keep your feet dry with boots that will protect you from the rain and are useful for hiking in wet conditions as well. Coachella Offers a More Shade Options

Posted on: April 28th, 2013 by Quik Shade No Comments

In the past, music festivals like Coachella usually meant spending hours walking around or standing outdoors in the desert heat to see your favorite musicians perform.  It could be uncomfortable and exhausting but for diehard music fans it was worth it just to see so many bands in one place.

As the audience for this type of festival has started to become an older crowd, Coachella is now offering shade canopy areas like the Yuma tent with air conditioning and comfortable chairs and sofas while people watch underground acts perform.  It is very different from the crowded and grassy portable shade tents of the past which offered little comfort to concert goers forced to deal with the heat and stand throughout the entire show.

As Coachella grows more popular and the ticket prices continue to go up it is only fair that they would offer more for the kind of money people are paying for these shows.  Anyone paying 300 bucks should have the opportunity to sit down and relax in this new type of club environment they are bringing in to the festival instead of something really basic like an instant canopy. People are expecting more from a festival this big and it is great that Coachella is evolving to meet people needs.

How To Repair A Canopy

Posted on: April 28th, 2013 by Quik Shade 2 Comments

If you have been using a shade canopy for all kinds of outdoor activities over the years then it has probably seen a lot of wear and tear.  Being exposed to the elements is what a canopy is built for but eventually there can be some issues with it after enough use.  There is no need to rush into buying a new canopy though when there are simple repair and replacements you can do to make it like new again.

If you are having trouble setting up your canopy and think it might be broken, first check and see if there are any important pieces missing.  Give it a thorough check and see if you can figure out if you might need just a couple canopy repair parts that will get it working again.  Sometimes it is really just a small thing that is keeping it from working properly and it won’t take long to simple swap out broken parts or replace missing pieces.  You can even do this last minute before a camping trip even though you might be tempted to just buy a new one.  Save some money by being resourceful and you can still make it to where you want to go.

The biggest part of a canopy that most people don’t realize is replaceable is the canopy top.   The top is what receives the most exposure to the sun which can wear it down as well as wind and rain in different climates.  If you bought an inexpensive canopy then it could get ripped and torn eventually after a lot of use.  The top is easily switched out for a newer one if that is the only issue you are having.  You can experiment with a different type of top to hopefully get more use out of the canopy in the future.

Charging Your Cellphone Outdoors

Posted on: April 28th, 2013 by Quik Shade No Comments

We’ve all run into issues of a lack of battery life on the go with our smart phones but there haven’t been many options until now.  Now companies are beginning to introduce ways to charge your cell phone anywhere with things like shade canopies and umbrellas that provide power to your devices.  These work because of solar panels on the top of the canopy that convert sunlight into electricity to power tablets and phones.

While the use of solar panels is a good effort towards going green my main concern with this type of system is what the cost might be.  Solar panels tend to be an expensive item that you have to lease if it were for your house for example.  It is a useful concept that could be very convenient but I think maybe only affordable to certain people who are willing to spend more for this type of unique shade product

Aside from the cost I’ve always thought that being outside on a camping trip or at the beach is a good chance to disconnect from our technological addictions.   The idea behind this canopy charging device seems to be for a situation in which you would be outdoors and away from any electricity.  I would think of it more as a chance to forget about your phone and enjoy nature instead of worrying about your battery life.

Mobile Vintage Shops Are a New Business Venture

Posted on: April 23rd, 2013 by Quik Shade No Comments

With the growing popularity of food trucks in many urban areas, people are starting to think outside of the traditional store or restaurant business.  Now many are creating their own businesses without having to pay the capital of an actual building.  Mobile vintage shops are now being started by people like Kate Clark who used to just sell their wares under a portable canopy shade at festivals.

Buying a truck instead of a store gives them the chance to take the products out to the customers.  They can set up their truck and mobile shade outdoors to get people interested and bring the products to their attention at many locations rather than just one.

I think having a mobile shop is a good way to start up a business if you don’t have enough money to purchase an actual store.  The only thing I wonder about is whether people will have a hard time actually finding your truck if they are interested in what you do.  With a shop that is constantly moving around it might be harder to get regular customers that would frequent the place.  Other than that it seems like it is a good way for people to move from selling their items at festival outdoor canopies to something that will help them establish a brand.

Getting Ready for the Beach

Posted on: April 20th, 2013 by Quik Shade No Comments

If you are planning on driving out to the beach on a sunny weekend or are even taking a beach vacation then it is important to be prepared when you venture out.  No one wants their fun beach day ruined by being cold, wet or sunburned.  Packing a few extra things can help you be prepared in case of any mishaps.  The most important thing to remember is to bring your sunscreen.

People have a tendency to forget this item but it is the easiest way to prevent a painful sun burn and also protect your skin from damaging UV rays.  In addition to the sunscreen you can also benefit from a canopy top that will keep you in the shade for comfort and protection.  You can bring a small umbrella or a large canopy for your whole family.  Other protection from the sun that can be helpful is a large hat, sunglasses, lip balm with sunscreen, and lightweight clothing.

For your comfort, getting dry and the least amount of sand as possible you will need a big blanket and some towels.  Chairs can also be a good idea if you want some support for your back while lounging on the sand.  Make sure to secure your blankets and towels by putting some heavy items on the corners so they don’t blow away.

You might also get a canopy weight to keep your umbrellas and shade items in place on a windy day.  Lastly, you can pack extra items for fun like swimsuits, surfboards, boogies boards or beach toys for the kids.   It might seem like a lot of preparation but you will be grateful once you get to the beach and you have everything you need to stay the whole day and enjoy yourself in the water. Emergency Shelter for Natural Disasters

Posted on: April 17th, 2013 by Quik Shade No Comments

When forces of nature like hurricanes create widespread destruction, people are left with nowhere to turn for shelter.  As many homes are lost and destroyed, the necessity for emergency shelters becomes important to keep people safe in the event of a disaster.  New shelters have been designed to be constructed easily with no tools required for people to use in emergency situations.

These shelters include insulated walls and floors as well as a canopy top for protection.    The shelters can be assembled within 25 minutes giving people a quick escape from the elements, some instant shade or a place to sleep.

It looks like these shelters are well-designed and are able to provide people with some temporary comfort while they recover from a serious disaster.   The instant canopy shelter will give them a sense of safety after going through something so traumatic and keep them from any further harm from the elements. They are designed to withstand wind, rain and snow making them perfect for harsh environments.  It is admirable that so much thought and hard work on the design went into something that will save people’s lives and give them some rest after a devastating experience.

Although people may be aware of basic sun protection practices like applying sunscreen when spending time outside, many are unaware of just how dangerous UV rays actually are. As the Earth’s ozone layer has been depleted by the industries of modern man, our daily exposure to the sun’s damaging rays has dramatically increased.

A sunburn can happen even on a cloudy day, and concrete, sand, water and snow can reflect the sun’s UV rays up to 90%. People put on some sunscreen and think they are safe for the day. The longer you are out in the sun, the more UV rays you absorb. Think of children with their love of playgrounds, who are getting triple the sun exposure of adults, who are susceptible to developing skin
even when very young.

More than a million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the US each year. When spending time in the sun, it is important to not only apply strong enough sun screen, but to also where protective clothing and to always have a sun shade for outdoor activities. Protect Against Aging

Posted on: April 1st, 2013 by Quik Shade No Comments

What is one of the biggest causes of wrinkles, dark spots and other signs of aging? Other than diet, UV light exposure is one of the most serious causes of aging of the skin. Not only does getting too much sun speed up the aging process but it also can lead to diseases like skin cancer in the future. No one wants to prematurely age and look 40 when they are only 28. However, this doesn’t mean you must always stay indoors and avoid fun things like the beach you just have to be cautious and prepared to keep out the sun.

It is a good idea to have a few different materials available to you whenever you plan on spending time outside in the sun. First of all, bigger items like portable awnings are perfect for taking with you to protect your whole body from the sun. These are basically structures that act as a shade and are collapsible and fold up so you can bring them anywhere. Take a fold up canopy with you anywhere you go that is sunny and you will decrease your chances of getting skin damage by a lot.

Having a canopy with you is a big help when there is a lot of sunlight and you need to be safe but there are other accessories you can have to be extra secure about your skin. Think about stocking up on sunscreen which is one of the most important ways you can protect yourself from the sun. This is something you should probably wear every day anyway and reapply every couple of hours. Hats and protective clothing can shield you from the sun even when you have a portable canopy so that you know for sure you are not putting your body in danger when you are outside.
